Deeper Learning in a Distance Learning World: Winter Workshop 5

Ignite and Reflect: Thinking Routines in the Culturally-Responsive Classroom
Kara Kling, Maret School

In recent efforts to apply Zaretta Hammond’s Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain to her own teaching, workshop leader Kara Kling has been rediscovering how Thinking Routines can be used as effective “bookends” for a class. Doing so has enabled her to zero in on the most fundamental idea about “culturally-responsive” teaching: creating a learner-centered classroom. In this workshop, we will discuss Hammond’s “ignite, chunk, chew, review” approach and explore strategies for using Thinking Routines to “ignite” student thinking at the outset of a class, unit, or project, as well as to have students apply, reflect on, and extend their understanding at the conclusion. This workshop will be useful for teachers across grade levels and subject areas interested in lesson design and specific ways Thinking Routines can support culturally responsive teaching.

Cost is $40.
